What is a DUI?
DUI and DWI
DUI means Driving Under the Influence, while DWI – the word known in some states – means Driving While Intoxicated. DUI became the more general word because ‘under the influence’ can refer to alcohol or drugs. DUID is now and again used to distinctively refer to Driving Under the Influence of Drugs. OWI is a little-used phrase meaning ‘Operating While Intoxicated.’ These terms are, however, fundamentally interchangeable.
