Penalties DUI
- The punishment of vehicle confiscation for DUI conviction – either lastingly or temporarily – is a likelihood in many states, usually for repeat offenders. It can involve major expense for the offender in the form of fines and administrative fees.
- An ignition interlock is a piece of equipment that attaches to the convicted DUI offender’s vehicle and requires the driver to perform a breath-test before the motor vehicle will start. This involves expense to the offender in installation fees and maintenance. It is a DUI punishment option in many states.
- Prosecution under civil law for property damages.
- A driver convicted of DUI may have his or her car confiscated, the registration suspended, or the car may even be sold.
- Alcohol tutoring or treatment/assessment for alcohol abuse can be required for DUI offenders in many states. These steps are often optional instead of serving a sentence of imprisonment or paying fines.
- In some states the DMV values points against your license for minor alcohol-related infringements, such as an open container in the car. After a certain number of points are reached, the driver may receive a warning letter or could face stiffer penalisation such as license suspension. When your driving benefit is reinstated, all previous driver license points are canceled. In states such as Georgia utilizing a points system, they are assembled from all states in the US, not just the state in which the driver resides.
